Mountain Reservations: 5 Essential Packing Tips

Image

One thing that improves the longer you travel is how well you pack.  I have gone from a chronic overpacker to someone who feels perfectly content with one rolling duffle bag for 12 months in Poland. (my next destination) Here are some of my best, tried and tested tips for packing your bag.

1) Be realistic.

It's very important to be aware of your own habits when traveling. Do you need to bring your curling iron, gel, spray, makeup, and heels? Good for you. Rock it. If you do not use those thing on a regular basis, leave them behind. If you can not straighten or curl your hair, you will still look fabulous. Be realistic about what you're going to need on a day-to-day basis.

2) You don't need as much as you think you need

This is always true. I promise. It is stilll something that I am getting accustomed to. It takes a lot to be totally honest with yourself and say "I really like this shirt. But I only wear it a few times a year. So I do not need it." Anything that you are packing as a "maybe", leave behind. You can always buy a cheap replacement item if times get tough.

3) Comfortable walking shoes are priceless.

Heels are adorable. Combat boots are badass. Comfortable flats reign supreme. If you are going to be out walking, you're going to want good shoes, that are already broken in. At the very least, pack them in your day bag for when your toes inevitable start hurting.

4) Pack bags in your bags

No matter what trip I'm going on, be in a year long adventure or a 4 day trip, I pack a smaller bag in my bigger bag. It's nice to have a small purse or backpack for when you'll be out all day that doesn't have your clothes, toothpaste, etc. They do not take up too much space, and they are generally a great addition to any trip.

5) Overpack socks and underwear.

You never know what is going to happen. Maybe you'll step in a puddle. Having a few back up pairs of underwear and socks, which take up very little room, is always a great idea. You will be glad to have them if you need them, and if you do not, you can always just leave them in your bag for next time!
